Withania Somnifera – Ashwaganda
Help for stress and debility
Perhaps because we are a clinic run by women, we have an abundance of female clients, many of whom have symptoms of exhaustion, chronic stress and sleeplessness.
In such cases, Withania is a beautiful herb to help rejuvenate and regenerate the nervous and reproductive systems, muscles, bones and adrenals.
Withania has also been used to help restore iron levels and balance thyroid function, where it shows signs of being under active. Thyroid issues often relate back to adrenal exhaustion, as the endocrine glands all work together in harmony, when in balance. So once there’s deficiencies or prolonged stress on one gland, the others will all be affected in turn.
The steroidal compounds in this herb help to tonify the muscles and can be used in cases of emaciation or failure to thrive in children. Adrenal hormones are gently rejuvenated and thus, energy levels increase with treatment.
As a rejuvenating herb, Withania works to prevent muscle loss (which helps to maintain a healthy metabolism) as well as premature ageing.
As a nourishing tonic for the nervous system, it helps to combat the effects of stress, lack of sleep, nervous exhaustion and debility. It works beautifully to calm the mind. It is no surprise that chronic western diseases like Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome respond well to treatment with the root of this plant.
In the reproductive sphere, traditional uses include PMS, anaemia, sexual debility as well as infertility of both sexes. It helps to stabilise the foetus in pregnant women.
Its most common use is in cases of prolonged stress and the resultant fatigue, debility, sometimes respiratory stress and lack of muscular energy.
It is wonderful to help recovery from severe or prolonged illness, post viral
syndrome and immune deficiency.
We use it in tincture form, in combination with other herbs and essences specific to the client’s needs.
