Mucus membranes line our body cavities and secrete a fluid called mucus that lubricates and moistens the cavity surfaces. (Tortora, p.680). In effect, we are one hollow, slippery tube on the inside! When viewed in this way, we can see that events, emotions and substances that irritate, inflame and damage our mucus membranes are the origins of inflammatory, progressive disease.
If we ask ourselves how well we are ‘sliding along life’s slippery slide’; how protected we feel from outside influences, how smoothly things are going, we can get an emotional gauge to the well being of this very important tissue.
It has been said that laughter lubricates conversation and communication. When things feel stuck and irritated as if they are eating away at us, laughter can be a powerful way to ‘break the circuit’ of stress and tension. Laughter promotes healthy changes in body chemistry; endorphins are released, the immune system is stimulated and pain pathways are blocked.
